We're sure Hamilfans will be satisfied with this news! As expected, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton alternate, Javier Muñoz, will replace the creator and star of the Tony-winning show on July 11. Miranda is scheduled to play his final performance in the title role on July 9.
As we reported from the Tony press room, Miranda is still planning to appear in Hamilton from time to time. According to Marks, he may "jump" into the tuner in other cities to cover actors' vacations.
Muñoz, who recently fought a battle with cancer, also covered for Miranda in In the Heights, before officially taking over the lead role of Usnavi on Broadway and later on the national tour.
Directed by Thomas Kail and featuring a book, music and lyrics by Miranda, Hamilton is inspired by the book Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow and is running at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
The cast also currently includes Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, Rory O’Malley as King George, Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Phillip Hamilton, Tony winner Daveed Diggs as Marquis De Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson and Tony winner Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler. A new Alexander Hamilton alternate will be announced at a later date.
